Gabriel Okara was a Nigerian novelist and poet born on April 21, 1921 in Bumodi. He was also known as Gabriel Imomotimi and Gbaingbain Okara. Okara was a self educated individual, who began his first career in book binding after leaving school. He continued his journey to success by writing plays and he was also feautured in many radio talkshows and advertisements in Nigeria. In 1960 Gabriel was recognized as highly trained craftsman. In his poems he wrote about the problems of Nigeria. In addition much thought was given to the fact that the African nation was torn away from their European colonizers and their African heritage. This happened around the 1960's after Africa was recognised as an independent nation and so he penned some of his poem on this cause.
